14-Year-Olds Can't Marry In Kansas Anymore

Because we always suspected that Kansas was so backwards and inbred that 14 year old kids were marrying... so the creative spammers making up these bogus headlines gave us one plausible enough to open up the email to see their spam.

PS - yeah, it was a Viagra spam :-).

  1. FYI, that headline was actually true, even if it did accompany a spam. In 2006, Kansas raised its legal age for marriage from 14 to 15. Georgia raised it from 14 to 16 in the same year.

The article I found this in had this disturbing little tidbit:

The state with the lowest marriage age is New Hampshire, which allows 13-year-old girls and 14-year-old boys to marry although parents can annul their children’s marriages until the children reach 18.

Apparently most states are 16 with parents permission. Here's the whole set of laws by state if anybody is interested.

  2. I suspect that the spammers are using The Onion Headline Generator (or something similar) to produce these headlines. Sometimes the headlines are hilariously true. Such as: Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over (from January 17, 2001). I suspect this is one of those kinds of headlines...

Oh shit. I just re-read that story from The Onion. Do those folks have a goddamned CRYSTAL BALL over there? 100% of what they said came true!

Ground rules: Comments that consist solely of insults, fact-free talking points, are off-topic, or simply spam the same argument over and over will be deleted. The penguin is the only one allowed to be an ass here. All viewpoints, however, are welcomed, even if I disagree vehemently with you.

WARNING: You are entitled to create your own arguments, but you are NOT entitled to create your own facts.
