Dead batteries and voltage regulators

Over at Moto-Tux.

And remember boys and girls, when you go to lean your motorcycle over onto its sidestand, it helps to deploy the sidestand first :-).

  1. Motorcycle charging systems are pretty weak in the first place, add that to the fact that motor cycle batteries pretty much don't seem to last very long anyway means problems.

But maybe they don't last long is because of the weak charging systems.

  2. One problem with the KLR charging system is that it overcharges batteries and boils them out. I put an AGM sealed battery in there to avoid that problem, but 4 years is a long time for an AGM battery in a motorcycle.

The KLR does have a weak charging system -- supposedly only 185 watts -- but many modern motorcycles have very good charging systems. My V-Strom 650 has a 400 watt alternator, or roughly what a typical small car has, and some of the bigger bikes have 600 or even 800 watt alternators -- every bit as big as a car alternator. So once again you're 20 years out of date on your information. But then, so is my KLR (20 years out of date, that is), so you accidentally were right :-).
