How long would a horror film be if the girls had guns?

Not long, apparently :-).

  1. Good one, loved it. Get a gun and be your own cop. The world is getting to be an uglier place and self protection is something you are entitled to.

  2. Actually, guys, this was a real-life gun store commercial, which is why there is a phone number and address for the gun store at the end :-). It was never aired because the TV station took one look at it and said "this is way too over the top for us to air"... it's still funny, though, to anybody who knows the various tropes of horror movies.

As for BBC's idea, as far as home defense goes I agree. Anybody breaking into your home while you are there has no good in mind and likely is intending to kill you. The proper outcome of such an even should be the criminal leaving in a bodybag, not you. 911 doesn't help much in this particular situation because even in cities with enough cops, the nearest cop is still usually 5 minutes away.

On the other hand, the best weapon for this scenario is not a machine gun, it is a 12 gauge semiautomatic open choke shotgun with 00 buckshot (semiautomatic because it kicks less, thus allowing you to bring the barrel back down on target again, and the three shot limit isn't a problem because three shots is all you'll get in the best case scenario, a shotgun because exact aim is not an issue and thus it's easier to use by people who are under stress).

And as for the notion that ordinary citizens should patrol the streets while armed and act as cops... err, no. Ordinary untrained citizens have neither the training nor the legal knowledge to use a weapon in a safe and effective manner in this scenario. Generally either the weapon doesn't get used in a situation where it's needed, or there ends up being extra dead bodies on the pavement. There is a *reason* why, in the Old West, it was generally prohibited for anybody except the Sheriff and his deputies to carry a sidearm in town...

  3. the thing to remember, above all else, when it comes to weapons for self defense in the home. is that, the vast majority of injuries and death inflicted by those weapons is upon close family and friends. you can have the best weaponry for the job (and i concur with friend tux, although, rather than 00 buck i would go with a lighter big bird load like a 3 1/2 or a 4, more pellets, smaller pellets, and less property damage because of energy dissapation). even if you have the best weapons, if you do not train the wielder of said weapon to the point of being able, in a time of extreme stress to perform the simple functions of bringing the weapon to ready, to bear on the target, and then pulling the trigger to do extreme damage to another human being the upshot is that you have, most likely, escalated the confrontation to the level of life and death, without being willing to kill yourself.

that's a bad side of the fight to be in.

  4. Excellent catch, NT.

I knew the E-B Misfit would laugh her , err, umm... something off at this.

Minstrel boy is absolutely right: #4 goose-shot is the best round for a home defense shotgun, although I always recommend making your first round #00 buck, followed by the birdshot. Many autoloaders have a four round magazine, if you look for surplus military gear.

  5. 1) Most shotguns have a 5-rd. capacity. They are only plugged at 3 rds. to hunt federal migratory birds. Who would would plug their home defense gun to fed. migratory hunting stds.?

    2) Most gunmen would use a pump vs. semiauto, as the semi auto is more prone to jamming.

It is a false construct that semiauto shotguns recoil less. This is only true with gas-operated. Recoil operated semi auto shotguns actually kick as much as pump shotguns. If one is ubduly affected by shotgun recoil, perhaps you should not be protecting your home with one. Most people when using a heavy recoiling weapon is a life-threatening situation seldom remember the recoil during the event.

Recovery on your 2nd shot is not important as the first shot is fired at knee level, the second at stomach, the third at chest level. That is the same technique you would use with an auto rifle.

No one uses a machine gun for home defense. Machine guns are belt-fed and crew-served--not useful for home defense. She's using an assault rifle, being fired as an automatic weapon. Most inappropriate in an urban environment.

    3) If it were I, I would use bird shot as a warning shot, and #2 or #4 turkey as a follow-up. This is better than a submachine gun, or any auto weapon, IMO. 5 x 24 is 120 deadly pellets in the air.

    4) One shouldn't hesitate to kill an intruder as a self defense measure, but you all are correct in that unfortunately, the average homeowner may hesitate to do so, to their own detriment.

In home defense ranges, I agree--bird shot will kill. The problem is not killing an adversary, but inadvertantly killing the neighbors. This is the legal advantage of a shotgun which shoots pellets vs. jacketed bullets. Killing your neighbor vs. the intruder is not a feather in your cap.

Cops gen. don't care too much about a dead intruder, but do care about innocent victims.

    5) An extended tube assault-type would be most appropriate, and they are relatively cheap.

    6) The sound of jacking the round in the chamber is often thought to be deterrent enough against a person with bad intentions. However, trying to scare people is ill-advised, as you do not want to scare the adversary, rather, you want to kill them (thereby preventing them from killing you.)

    7) MB is correct--more folks are killed by their own weapons than are intruders. A fine point between having the weapon secured for safety vs. having it readily available for use in a threat scenario.

    8) Proper crime prevention is preferable to placing the focus on weapon usage. Hardening your home as a target is probably your best proactive measure against attack. The best way to survive the gunfight is not to get in it.
