Original taint

So let's set the Wayback Machine to 1964, and Gloria Jones is a girl singer for Uptown Records, a label set up by Capitol Records to compete with Motown. And she records this song, "Tainted Love"...

  1. I'm surprised I never heard the original, because when I was a teenager and in my early 20s, I used to listen to a few semi-underground radio stations that played old R&B, doo-wop and blues. This has such a strong "stride" beat that I'm surprised it was not a big hit. Makes me have less regard for the Soft Cell cover, even though that was a deserved hit, because they did not re-work the underlying beat all THAT much. There's a lot of great music that can be RE-made from old soul, like that Fatboy Slim song "Praise You."

  2. Wow, gold-plated tape drives! I've mounted many a tape in my early computing career, but never on a gold-plated drive.

  3. Bukko, I think the problem was twofold, that the label she was signed on with (Capitol) was a bunch of middle-aged white dudes who didn't have a clue how to market to young people or to blacks (her label's biggest names were FRANK SINATRA and DEAN MARTIN, for cryin' out loud!), and secondly, that the backing for the song wasn't particularly strong. Gloria Jones has a strong and unique voice, it deserved backing that was equally strong.

Steve, clearly you never had to actually buy one of those tape drives, or you would have at least sworn that they were as *expensive* as if they were made out of gold!
