Odd things happening

Blogger appears to be on the blink. Several comments have appeared in my email but not on the comments pages. If they remain gone in the morning I'll manually re-post them, they're too interesting to remain gone...

Blogrolls and RSS, oh my!

I've now switched my blogrolls to Google Reader, because Bloglines quit updating my feeds. Siiigh! So if I haven't been around your place commenting on your recent postings, it's not because I hate you -- it's because Bloglines hates you. Hopefully Google Reader will be more reliable...

Friends don't let Friends use JS-Kit/Echo

A lot of the early blogs use Haloscan because Blogger didn't have its own commenting system until late 2004. JS-kit is discontinuing the free Haloscan service in favor of their proprietary/non-free JS-Kit Echo commenting service, and implying that the only way you can keep your comments is to use their for-pay JS-Kit service. But JS-Kit has some serious problems:

  1. It's not free (duh). For those of you maintaining a blog as a hobby, that's a big drawback.
  2. It doesn't allow posting links. If I want to post a link to a web site, the only thing that works is bare links. Maybe.
  3. It doesn't email me when someone adds a comment. I became accustomed to receiving email when someone added a comment to a thread I'd posted a comment on, but JS-Kit won't do that.
  4. Echo often sends blogs into an endless loop. Alternate Brain, for example, keeps being unreadable because it's just refreshing the page over and over and over again in an endless loop and never letting me actually see it.
I high recommend using Disqus if you are currently using Haloscan or Echo for your comments system. It has none of the above problems, and will import comments from Echo or Haloscan. Even if you have already paid for Echo to import your comments from Haloscan, I *highly* recommend trying Disqus. I've pretty much given up commenting on sites running Echo -- it's that terrible for users, especially the lack of email notification thingy.

Just say NO to JS-Kit and their terrible Echo product. Thank you!

Haloscan is fried

Looks like since they got bought out by JsKit, nobody cares whether it works or not. So if you're using Haloscan right now, I suggest that you find another comments system, because Haloscan is broke. Personally I'm using Blogger's comments system, which Just Works and which has a huge corporation behind it that isn't going out of business anytime soon. (Unless you think Google, which has over 50% of online advertising, is going out of business anytime soon!).

It's always B.A.D. here

Yeppers, it's always Blogroll Amnesty Day here. I regularly am adding obscure blogs to my blogroll over on the left, and occasionally to my "No linky dagnabit" list (the one for folks who don't link to me). My rules are simple -- have a non-commercial site (sorry, spammers need not apply), and link to me. I'll either find you and add you to my list, or you can leave an email or a comment.

I don't go and do the gigantic production or anything about how great I am for linking to all these blogs smaller than mine (heck, I get maybe 50 regular readers a day, plus another 300 people who drop in thanks to Google searches), but unless you just do something that irritates the hell out of me (such as deleting my comments off of your blog), your link is my link. So go browse my left column and find some blog more obscure than mine even (as hard as that may be!), and link to it on your own blog if you have a blog, and let's let the Big Orange and etc. all go to ****.

Can I post?

I'm almost disappointed, all the best liberal blogs are being locked out by Blogger.com yet my own little penguin nest on the Internet is still posting fine. Maybe they just like all the penguin droppings littering the place, sob!

Brokeback Blogger

Seems that Jim Yeager (the blogger formerly known as Mimus Pauley) just can't quit his addiction.

Next up: Brokeback Blogger, The Movie. "Why can't I quit you, Blogger.com?" Mimus shall mournfully intone. Heh.

Pet peeve #235234523 -- blog registration

Look, if you have a blog, you're just, well, a guy with a blog. You're not some effin' big shot who can demand of people that they do a lotta crap to read and reply on your blog. You're just a guy with a blog, one of approximately 4,000,000,000 other people on this planet of 6,000,000,000 people who have a blog.

So anyhow, it's okay if you make me log in to blogger.com to post on your blog. No big deal. That login also works on half the other blogs on the planet. One thing that pisses me off, though -- and that has driven me away from most of the "big" blogs -- is if you make me sign up for an account that works ONLY ON YOUR OWN BLOG.

How fucking crazy is that? Look, you stupid motherfucker, I don't give a crap how goddamned full of yourself you are. You are NOT so goddamned *SPECIAL* that I'm going to go out of my way to participate on your blog by signing up for an account that works on one, and ONLY one blog of the several hundred on my blogroll and approximately 4,000,000,000 other blogs on this planet. I mean, who the fuck you think you are? Jesus Christ and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi reincarnated in one body? Get over your fucking self, already!

Better media, please?

We got serious things happening, folks. Serious things. Record numbers of people on food stamps. Record numbers of foreclosures and evictions. Banks collapsing. People losing their jobs. Serious things.

So what is the press and blogosphere all atwitter about today? Well, apparently... over whether a Presidential candidate sneaks smokes from time to time.

WTF?!

Stupid spammers

Anonymous posting temporarily disabled. If necessary, I will turn on comment moderation, but I doubt it'll be necessary, turning off anonymous posting usually whacks them.

Reminder

I also post at the Mockingbird's Medley. And not everything I post there is posted here. Sometimes it's just a few words difference. Sometimes, as with the linked article, it's a much-expanded posting based on a small section of a posting here. But anyhow, you might want to take a spin by the Medley from time to time after you're finished up here...

Call out the Waaahmbulance!

So-called "journalists" whine about those bloggers who are, like, MEAN to them. The next bit, cleaned up a bit, goes to Richard Wollfe and his editors at Newsweek:

Dear Richard Wollfe: I don't want journalists to be partisans. I want journalists to report the truth. A citizen of a democracy has to know what's true and what's not true, so we can contact our representatives and tell them how we want them to vote, or vote them out of office if they refuse to do the right thing. Somebody has to figure out what is true and what's not true and report it, and if you useless "reporters" (stenographers) refuse to do so and instead whine that it's not your job because that is "analysis" (huh? When is reporting the truth "analysis"? Truth simply *is*!), we bloggers have to do so. And if you're upset that we bloggers are mean to you because you're making us do your job for you... Oh WAAAHHH! Poor little babies! We call on you reporters to do your job, we call on you to dig through all the piles of reeking flying monkey shit raining down on our head and report the truth buried underneath all the lies and deceptions and misleading statements, and you stamp your little footies and throw down your little journalistic shovels like munchkins going on strike and whine "Not my job!" at the top of your pathetic little voices. And it's we BLOGGERS who are out of line? DO YOUR FUCKING JOB AND THEN WE WON'T PISS ON YOU. Got it?

We bloggers already have full-time jobs making widgets or otherwise doing shit that makes the country's economy work. We don't have the resources of multi-billion-dollar corporations behind us. We don't have a team of researchers to dig up all the facts regarding a particular issue. Yet WE ARE MORE OFTEN RIGHT THAN YOU ARE because we do the job you refuse to do. We were right about Saddam's non-existent weapons of mass destruction. We were right about the lack of a Saddam-al Qaeda connection. We were right about the disaster that would be the Iraq occupation. We were right when we predicted civil war in Iraq. We were right, and we were right because we spent fucking HOURS AND HOURS of our own precious time away from our families and cats and livelihoods doing your fucking job for you and looking up the goddamned FACTS. The facts that you piss-poor excuses for "reporters" were too fucking stupid, lazy, or just plain bought to look up for yourself, instead just acting as stenographers for whatever vile political bullshit was being spewed by the goddamned Ministry of Truth as if it were God's own manna from the heavens instead of just a pile of reeking flying monkey shit.

So don't give me that bullshit about how we bloggers are so "mean" to you. Do your fucking job, report the truth, and you'll never hear from us again. Shit, I'd quit blogging tomorrow if I had access to a free press that would report the truth to me. But I don't. And I won't, as long as you reporters refuse to do your job and refuse to report the truth because you're too busy stamping your widdle footsies and whining that it isn't your job... shit, if it isn't YOUR job, then whose it? A fucking PENGUIN'S?!
