I think my answer to that question is important enough to move up here to the front page:
Mimus, I think it's just that people don't want to admit that the majority of Americans voted for a shallow drunken cocaine-addled frat boy not once, but *twice*. So they try to turn the town drunkard and druggie into Richard Nixon, a conspiratorial Machiavelli working a deep game. Thing is, George ain't deep. He's not stupid by any means, but he was a shallow frat boy in college, and he's a shallow frat boy today. Anything deeper than "Condi! Where's my beer!", belching while watching a football game on TV, or sticking his middle finger up in the air at a reporter he doesn't like just ain't in him.
On the other hand, I surely wouldn't put it past President Cheney to pull some really eeeevil crap...

9/11 is so over, and I wish people would just get over it. America asked for that and they should be asking themselves how to over come it instead of trying to figure out how to 'protect' them selves from it happening again.

There's this wonderful discussion in "The Matrix" where choice is discussed. In short, when people choose between "the blow on the head or the poke in the eye" (to quote Monty Python) they then believe that that is their opinion and will defend it against the truth that they might otherwise see.

What? Give up the greatest boon to Republicanism since....since the blue dress? NOT A CHANCE! We must, MUST, I tell you, indulge in this annual grief fest every September 11th for (based on the chronic celebrations...uh...memorials commemorating the assassination of JFK) for at least 35 years, with every 5th year being ratcheted up to a major event.
ReplyDeleteThe Bush administration is not going to let go of this so far successful fear-mongering. Their constant promotion of American terror works, and (in their minds) justifies all sorts of skullduggery, such as the war in Iraq. The more fear they can generate in the minds of Americans, the more power they have, and since power equals wealth, that is the name of the game.
We need to take a hard look at our foreign policies, and accept that we cannot control the entire planet without having to deal with serious and violent objections by people in other lands who have the silly notion that they should have the right to their own form of government without interference by The Only Super-Power in the World. In other words, we need to learn to keep our collective noses in our own business. We have no right to meddle in the affairs of other countries.
The attacks in 2001 were a tragedy and a shock to the American conscious because we considered ourselves to be too big, too strong, and too beloved to be vulnerable to hatred. That proved to be untrue and all these years later, instead of correcting it, we're still whining about it.
Team Bush and the main stream media are not about to let go of the only thing they have left with which to abuse the American public and thereby retain their ill-gotten power. Without it, we might focus on the lies they have told and the loss of our freedoms that they have promoted. Without it, we might demand that Congress rouse themselves and actually do something sensible and effective to prevent more attacks. The claim that we "must fight them there so we won't have to fight them here" is so arrogant and outrageous as to be positively mind-boggling. Taking an ugly, violent war to the cities and homes of people who had done nothing to hurt us and watching and listening to the idiot in the White House preen and brag that he has protected us by murdering innocent people is so obscene and twisted that it defies reason.
Get used to it. For as long as the public accepts it, you must, every 11th of September, shed your tears and hide your indignation that the people who have been elected to serve and protect are actually guilty of the worst kind of abuse. To refuse to take part in the weeping and beating of the breast once a year is to demonstrate your hatred of America and the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. You who believe that we can make no progress until we get past the past are traitors. Coulter and O'Reilly said so.
The black helicopters are circling. Be afraid, be very afraid!
