I was saying that all it would take would be one Republican Senator switching to the Democratic Party to eliminate the filibuster as an obstacle to Obama's agenda. But I was thinking Olympia Snowe. Arlen Specter?! Wow. Somebody really is holding a finger up in the breeze and seeing it blow a different way... but then, the Rethugs did their best to run him out of the party, with the RNC chairman even saying that the RNC would fund his opponent in the Republican primary, so I suppose this is yet another case of the Rethugs shooting themselves in the foot. Bwahahah!

Is there any way we can block Specter from joining? Seriously, let the Republicans have him. Specter becoming a Dem does nothing but guarantee that his seat will go Republican the next time he's up for reelection.
ReplyDeleteDude, his seat would go Republican either way. At least this way the filibuster is off the plate for the next year and a half, assuming that Reid the Mild can keep Specter in line.

Specter voted for the Stimulus package, which made him a target for the GOP who demanded he vote in lockstep. He has a degree in Ecomomics, BTW, which makes his vote all the more credible.
ReplyDeleteSpecter is not going to vote in lockstep with Democrats, either, which will be irritating at times. But we owe him for voting his conscience on the Stimulus bill for the good of the country.
And as you observed, this further weakens the leadership of the wingnut GOP, accelerating the polarization. Anything less than a huge welcome will send the wrong signal to moderate Republicans who are dissatisfied with the direction of the GOP.
Mmm hmm. Maybe Snowe will too.
