The end of the world is today

So says James Howard Kunstler at Clusterfuck Nation.

There is not much more for me to add to that, other than to hope he's wrong.

  1. Well, I can't understand anything except "bad." And I may be paraphrasing, there.

I assume it means the global economy is like Stan in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAKsMnAM8vk&feature=related

  2. Well, things aren't looking good, that's for sure, but no telling what way things may spin off.

Kunstler is interesting reading but basically he is a book selling whore, predicting doom is good business for his whoring.

I won't spend money on his books, I'll spend it on ammo and long lasting food.

  3. Kunstler is my biggest online pleasure every Monday morning. I not only bought his "Long Emergency" book, I sent a copy to my kid so she could learn about Peak Oil, the fallacy of the "hydrogen will save us" magical thinking mindset, and other unpleasant truths about what's to come. People fault Kunstler about how it all hasn't fallen apart yet, so he must be wrong, but that's just whistling past the graveyard. Resource depletion is REAL, and Kunstler does a good job of envisioning how that will play out. I find him grim, but the words that he and other Doombloggers put out give me impetus to keep preparing as best I can.

  4. It has occurred to me that the real purpose of the super-wealthy elite is not just to squeeze a few extra dollars out of the rest of us, but in fact to precipitate large-scale disaster. Disaster that kills not thousands, nor millions, but billions of people.

Resource depletion is serious business. But less so, if the world's population is 100 million.

I'm sure zombie movies look really, really appealing to people with big fences and security forces. Just think of all the free stuff, once the zombies stop twitching and rot away!

Numerian at Agonist gets into the weeds on this one. Does sound like reason to worry. Better thinker than Kunstler though.

  6. You read Kunstler??!!

Picking up jaw on the floor.

There are a ton of sites I haven't had time to read in months because I have been busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest and his is one, much to my chagrin.

  7. Linky doesn't worky, even when I get all cut 'n' pasty. Is this what you meant? People should learn the <a href= trick to code clickable links. If a techno dino like me can do it, anyone can.

I haven't read all the Numerian piece, but anyone who quotes that Ann Barnhardt character without also noting that she's a crazed Xtian fundie Muslim-hater -- Google her for some disgusting YouTube rants she makes -- has not done their due diligence.

But I agree with the overall tenor of the piece. Are you ready for some bank runs? THAT is what will collapse The System far faster than OWS. I've got food and money for at least a few months in a place where I can lay my hands on it. A bank holiday will be no picnic, when the ATMs stop squirting out money, the credit card transactions are not processed, and letters of credit for overseas businesses are no good. (No imports/exports!) I reckon a bank run/systemic implosion is way more likely than a nuclear explosion. You gotta ask yourself: what would happen to ME if the money machine broke for a few days, a week, a month?

P.S. Why all the hatin' on Kunstler? He's hyperbolic, but I admire his ability to sling invective. His insult vocabulary is astounding. I still don't know what a "schmickler" is, and I even tried to look it up in the Yiddish dictionary online.
