Some experimental music from Lee Renaldo (who is finally looking his age), Steve Shelley, and Enrique Morente. You might begin to see why I think Steve Shelley could actually function in a jazz type improvisational environment, unlike the typical rock drummer. The deal is that Steve isn't your typical dumb rock drummer that knows a few standard rock licks and fills and everything else in the band is built around those standard rock licks and fills. Steve actually understands music. He's been a producer, he's been a composer, he studies and works and performs in a variety of styles, and my suspicion is that if you asked him to back a jazz band, he'd not be outstanding at it, but he'd do as workmanlike a job as you'd expect from a lunch pail player and make the rest of the band sound all the better for it.
