Siiiigh!

Marianne Faithful was so beautiful and could sing so well back then... today she's a dumpy old lady with a cracked voice, her beaituful voice destroyed by heroin, booze, and cigarettes during the 1970's. She did it just because she wanted to see what it was like to be a bum. Just as she became Mick Jagger's squeeze (and had this song written for her) just because she wanted to bang one of the Rolling Stones. I have to say, she's gotten everything she's wanted out of life, pretty much, for better or for worse. Hard to fault her choices when I'm not the one who had to live them...

  1. Christ, she looks terrified. Marianne was easy on the eyes, but if this video is any indication, she had all the stage presence of a garden gnome.

My g-g-generation, but mt memories of Marianne are quite vague.

But '65 was rather a bad year for me. And I didn't even do drugs.

    Siiigh, indeed!

  2. That was a beautiful song. At the time I hadn't known that Mick Jagger wrote the song. When the Stones came out with their version about a year after Maryanne Faithful, I was thinking "God, they really wrecked that song."

  3. Marianne certainly isn't terrified of the limelight today. She might be a horrid dumpy old lady with a screechy cracked voice, but she goes out there and she does the songs she wants to do, when she wants to do it, and just doesn't give a shit whether the audience cares about it or not. She has diva-quality stage presence today. And she has the most hilarious stories from her long life. And then she sings, which sort of ends the magic because, well, her voice is just gone now, but so it goes...

  4. I have always loved her cracked, craggly drug history-infused vocals on Broken English, though
