Gaffes don't matter

The left wing blogosphere and twittersphere is abuzz with the news that GOP Presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann today warned of impending attack on US by Attila the Hun and his Horde. Or some long-defunct nation, anyhow.

Thing is, this kind of gaffe doesn't matter to Michelle Bachman's base, who would be puzzled about the whole thing. Soviet Union, Russia, whatever, it's all just somebody "over there" to them, and everybody knows that all them furriners hate America and want to kill us, right? You have to remember that her base are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know...

  1. And their vote counts just as much as yours... Maybe more, if the voting is done on a manipulable electronic machine.

  2. Such a silly woman when everyone knows that Russia, and China, and Venezuela, and Iran, only think the very best of the USA whose friendship they cherish!

And, Bukko, are you implying that perhaps people who fail to follow exactly in the footsteps of our 'Dear Host' should have their votes devalued?

  3. Right, because imaginary attacks from long-gone nations are clearly what we must elect a President to protect us against. I suggest she also offer to protect us from the dire threat of attacks by the Ottoman Empire, which I understand has expansionary goals and a long-time history of attacking the West ;).

  4. And the sad thing, now that I think about it, is that her base -- you know -- would eat that shit up. Next thing you know, you'd hear the other candidates similarly offering to protect America from the dire threat of the Ottoman Empire, and Preznit Hopey Changey himself likely would end up having to go onto national television and point out that the nation has suffered no Ottoman attacks during his Presidency. Siiiiiiigh.... WASF.

  5. You know what I like most about this blog and its 'inhabitants'? It's the certainty, the concrete conviction, the doubt-free confidence, the complete and utter faith.

It warms the heart, no, really, it does.

  6. Absolutely. I have faith that 50% of all people are of below average intelligence -- and that average ain't so smart nowadays. The sad thing is that the majority of idiots don't realize they're idiots, and end up pontificating endlessly upon things they know nothing about regardless of anything like, say, actual observable facts in actual observed reality.

Meanwhile those of us in the reality-based community, with our unshakable belief that there does exist an actual observable reality with actual observable facts in it and with our silly notion that our pontifications should, like, have some correspondence with said reality and facts, are just being silly, I suppose. After all, the next few cycles of the news cycle will be taken up by politicians rushing to pontificate about protecting us from the dire Ottoman threat. Who am *I* to point out the fact that the Ottoman Empire has been defunct since 1918?! The nerve of me!

  7. Bad, while you might get some giggles out of the back and forth with Mr. Duff, it would be a kindness to the rest of us if you would just block his comments from your blog. Reasonable disagreement or countering viewpoints are interesting and valuable but that's not what he offers.

    Your blog = your call.

  8. The evidence leads us to assume that penguins are very compassionate and this one in particular, in being rational and exercising a kindness by indulging troll communication :)

  9. Out at the country cafe and motel I spend a lot of time at there's all kinds of foreigners always dropping by, it's how they keep going on out there. Sure is a goofy planet.

  10. We need to elect a president that will protect us from ourselves.

  12. Hey -- at least my hammered comment had a funny link, eh?

  13. Oh sure, but it referred to a comment that wasn't there anymore, so it made no sense lacking that context. I enjoyed the link though, as I always enjoy Monty Python. BTW, the Running of the Upper Class Twits skit is probably more appropriate for the Duffer :).

Ground rules: Comments that consist solely of insults, fact-free talking points, are off-topic, or simply spam the same argument over and over will be deleted. The penguin is the only one allowed to be an ass here. All viewpoints, however, are welcomed, even if I disagree vehemently with you.

WARNING: You are entitled to create your own arguments, but you are NOT entitled to create your own facts. If you spew scientific denialism, or insist that the sky is purple, or otherwise insist that your made-up universe of pink unicorns and cotton candy trees is "real", well -- expect the banhammer.
