Clean ears

Mencken has the cleanest ears of any cat in the world. The Mighty Fang makes sure of that.

  1. My kitty sisters are grouchy with each other, so we get very little inter-kitty washing, and no cuddling at all, anymore.

But they both have alternates that seem to please them.

Cleo likes to lick wood. Bare wood is best. Open a drawer that hasn't been opened lately, and she loves the exposed bits.

Dora likes to lick a computer monitor, when she can. And her favorite photograph.

  2. Menken's a natural grouch and his natural inclination is to whack TMF with his paw when TMF does this, but Mencken has gotten old and whacking TMF with his paw every time TMF tries to groom him has gotten to the point where it requires more energy than Mencken is willing to put out. You'll note however that TMF is holding Mencken's head with both paws, otherwise Mencken would move his head out of reach of TMF's tongue.

  3. Very cute. I have a lab with very dirty ears. I used to have a cat and another dog who both liked to clean the lab's ears but sadly, the cat and the other dog have since died. Now *I* have to clean her ears. Yuck. Maybe you could hire your ear cleaning cat out ;)

  4. TMF would totally do it too. He even washed my mother's idiot miniature poodle's ears, which confused said poodle to no end (since she was blind).

  5. I've noticed that ear-licking is often a prelude to aggression. It often seems INTENDED to be that way on the part of the licker, like they're invading the space of the lickee to be aggravating or expressing dominance. Our smaller, less-dominant girl cat sometimes vigorously licks the ears of her bigger, more bullyish brother when he's lying in a sunny spot. He tolerates for a while, and then fighting/chasing/loss of fur wads ensues.

  6. Pretty much the same dynamic with Mencken and TMF, but sometimes TMF falls asleep before Mencken gets around to whacking/chasing, at which point you have TMF with his nose buried in Mencken's fur and Mencken looking slightly annoyed but not enough to do anything about it.

TMF is bigger than Mencken, btw. He would be dominant but he just lacks Mencken's feral meanness, since TMF was never feral.
