WTF was this?

This is on a spit of land sticking out into the Golden Gate almost directly under the Golden Gate Bridge, on the side opposite San Francisco. WTF is it? Or was, I should say, given that it's obviously pretty much done for, with one building gone and the other building almost gone? Curious penguins want to know!

  1. Google is my friend. According to the National Park Service, this is the remains of a fog signalling station, and the flat part on the roof of the building to the right apparently is where a search light hut was located. The foundations are for the homes of the station masters. They have a cool picture of the installation just as the pier for the Golden Gate Bridge was going up in one of their walking tour brochures on their web site. Apparently there is still a fog signal located in the remaining crumbling building to make those creepy moaning foghorn noises to warn ships away from the point when it's dark and foggy, but it's all automated nowdays of course, not like back in the day when a stationmaster had to tend it.

  6. Hike on down. It's a really neat old building. I used to play there as a kid.

  7. Sorry, Pyg. Can't hike on down. Homeland Security has it all blocked off now. What terrorists would want with a foghorn, I have no idea, but then again Homeland Security's main target isn't terrorists. Homeland Security's main target is... us.
