Safer than the L.A. freeways

Army recruiting is at a disasterous low. Who's to blame? Army recruiters know: It's the parents.

"(Parents) say they don't want to send their son or daughter off into danger," one Los Angeles recruiter said. "There's a lot of misconceptions about Iraq. Frankly, percentage-wise you face more of a risk driving on the freeways out here."

Now, I've not spent a LOT of time on the L.A. freeways, but I could swear that I've never seen scenes like this:

Nor do I recall seeing scenes like this:

Now, perhaps I might have occasionally seen a scene like this:

but really, have you ever seen *this* on a L.A. freeway?

I dunno, maybe I just haven't spent enough time on the L.A. freeways, but I really don't recall seeing car bombs, IED's, and other such explosives going off all the time. Am I just a sheltered penguin? Curious penguins want to know!

  1. That last picture actually does look like something I saw on an LA freeway last summer.

In the middle of downtown, on the 110, on one of those exits where it funnels you off into a separated lane before it lets you off the freeway, I got stuck behind a fully-engulfed CalTrans truck.

    Hilarious!

Still not going to Iraq, though.

  2. CalTrans drives armored personnel carriers in Los Angeles? Wow, that's hardcore!

  3. Los Angeles County had 809 traffic fatalities in 2003. Since the population of Los Angeles County was estimated to be 9,871,506 people in 2003, this is 8.21 deaths per 100,000 people.

The fatality rate in Iraq for U.S. troops alone is around 600 per 100,000 troops per year (1700+ out of 140,000 in just over 2 years).

This exercise in basic numeracy is brought to the GOP by the numbers "0" through "9", the letters "G-O-O-G-L-E", and the Reality Based Universe™.

  4. Looks like the I-5 just outside Bakersfield today.

  5. That's a false statement by that recruiter. There are no roadside bombs being used in the US. So FUUU*K him!

  6. Conflagrations like that used to be pretty common until all the VW Beetles wore out or burned up. They had a tendency to arc to ground from the ignition coil right through the fuel line! I figured that out when I traced an ignition misfire by looking for arcs at night.
