In the early 90's a couple of film school types from, err, Portishead (England), decided they'd like to score a spy movie, maybe the score for a James Bond movie or something. They rounded up a torchy sounding singer and made a short film called "To Kill A Dead Man" to highlight their skills at making spy movie music. That didn't work out, but some of the scenes from that short film made it into the music video for the first hit of the band this trio created, which they named, err, Portishead.
This is "Sour Times", from Portishead's first album, Dummy. Occasionally I get into a Portishead mood and put my favorite songs from that album on rotation, one after the other, over and over again...

Note -- if you have particular music you'd like to suggest, feel free to do so. Just be advised that if it has more than a few hundred thousand hits on YouTube, I'm *extremely* unlikely to program it...
"Sour Times" was my introduction to Portishead. And when I heard Dummy, it just about blew me away. (In fact, one of my top-ten favorite songs of all time is "Roads.")
ReplyDeleteRequests? Hell, I'm always in the mood for some Portishead. Leonard Cohen and King Crimson, too. But it's your blog, so it's your call...
Oh my goodness. Roads is one of those when it comes up on my iPod, I loop it back over and over again.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is that out of the 30 or so songs that Portishead has done on their three albums, I can play about 20 of them over and over again. But the readers of this blog would get mighty bored if that's what I did. You and I might be able to listen to Portishead in a loop for days, but somehow I doubt most folks enjoy Portishead's music that much :).
Leonard Cohen. Problem there is a shortage of decent Cohen clips on YouTube. I'll go on a Cohen hunt sometime this week though. King Crimson... twenty years ago I loved their stuff. Today... I dunno, I guess my tastes changed.
