The news flaks are all atwitter about a young white blonde woman killed by a black man. Yet for some reason, they seem to be utterly silent about a a middle-aged Hispanic woman shot and killed by a black man. Google News shows me two references to the killing of Aldegunda Alvarez. Meanwhile, Google gives me 1,074 references to the killing of Eve Carson.
But I forget. Aldegunda Alvarez had one of them funny furriner names, and was, like, brown. Remember, a young white blond woman is 537 times more valuable than a middle-aged Hispanic woman. Racism is dead in America -- in some parallel universe Bizarro America, anyhow. Alrighty, then!

Perhaps it is also that the young lady had a future while the middle-aged one had already chosen a future-less path. Maybe she was buying drugs and got rolled. Maybe there is more to the story. How many "black mens" do killing that just, somehow, free up boyfriends/husbands to go catting.
ReplyDeleteAs far as racism, look no farther than the Obama hysteria. Ohmigod, a citizen with dark skin might just be President. After only 300 years. Why can't they wait some more?
Me, other than the horrendous risk to him and his family, it's about damn time.

Lets be honest here. You're a racist. Eve is all over the news, not because she is white, but because she was the student body president of a major university who had accomplished more in her abbreviated life than you or the majority of America will accomplish in our life time.
ReplyDeleteRace is not and has not ever been the issue with this case, however much you would like to portray it that way. Eve Carson never considered color when choosing her friends or who to help. No one related to the case is making this about race. None of her friends have portrayed this as a race issue. No this case has never been about race.
You are a racist to make it about race.
Right. It's just *accident* that the death of a white blond woman gets 1,000 links, while the death of a Hispanic woman gets 2 links.
ReplyDeleteSeems to me that you're saying that one person is worth more than the other person. And funny, it is *always* the white blond woman who gets the 1,000 links, and *always* the woman of color who gets the 2 links. *Always*. Once says nothing. Twice could be coincidence. Three times says, hmm, maybe that's a trend. Over and over and over again... mister, if you have an innocent explanation for that other than that our society values young blond white women over women of color, I'd love to hear it. Because I sure as hell can't think of one.

I am appalled. For you, it is just another opportunity to give your armchair commentary/conjecture on a "middle-aged person" who had "chosen a future-less path...[and] was buying drugs and got rolled."
ReplyDeleteAlde was a single mother with four beatiful children. She was my custodian at my school for many years. She was cheerful, sweet, hardworking and conscientious. We learned how to communicate: she taught me Spanish and I taught her English. Her beautiful son came to work with her sometimes in the evening. She was diligent and a pleasure to know. I am shocked and filled with tears over her murder, and I am concerned about her four children who are left as orphans.
You knew nothing about her. For you, she was just a name to slander in a self-righteous rant.
I am tired of blogs where ignorant people can get on line and say ignorant things about people regard as props for their column.
G-d gave you two ears and one mouth. I suggest you do twice as much listening and half as much talking.
And I and the people who loved and knew Alde will try to get ready for her funeral.
Probably the bit that got me fuming was when the Anonymous Bigot simply assumed (emphasis upon the ASS in "assumed") that the middle aged woman was buying drugs. No. I lived and taught school in Houston long enough to know that Hispanics don't buy drugs from blacks there, they have their own network of drug dealers who bring the shit in from Mexico (I taught members of one of the families involved in that trade -- scary, scary people). And middle-aged Hispanic women are not a typical drug-using demographic, unlike, say, young white blonde women like Eve Carson, who I can tell you from experience suck down cocaine and heroin by the bushel-load to "stay thin" (they even have a name for the consumptive look that comes with extensive cocaine and heroin use, it's called "heroin chic"). It is far, far more likely that Eve Carson was killed in a drug deal gone bad than that Aldegunda Alvarez was killed in a drug deal gone bad. But the first Anonymous, whose pointy white hat apparently is cutting off the flow of blood to the puny little thing that passes for a "brain", immediately jumped to the assumption that Alde was killed in a drug deal gone bad because, well, she was brown. Then had the gall to insist that his or her assumption wasn't racist.
ReplyDeleteSigh. Some folks need to leave their sheets on their bed
Anonymous #2, I did not know Alde. But I lived in Houston and taught in H.I.S.D. and knew many women like Alde, which is why I knew it was just wrong that some white chick who got killed by a black man has her face and her attacker's face plastered all over the news media all around the nation, while a good hard working woman in a custodial job in Houston gets killed by a black man... nada. Just brief mention in the local media. It should be an outrage. Sad to say, it isn't. As far as white Amerikkka is concerned, it's just two darkies killing each other, nothing for good Amerikkkans to concern themselves with. Sigh.
Meanwhile, I feel for your loss, and wish there was more that I could do than just mention Aldegunda Alvarez on my blog. Every untimely death is a tragedy. Sad to say, there's too many of them every day.

The Houston Astros hat that Eve Carson's killer was wearing does have a gang affiliation. The “H” logo pays homage to Larry Hoover who was in various incarnations of the Black Gangster Disciples, which he founded. Throughout the 60’s Hoover created alliances and “nations” of gangs in the Chicago area. Lemaricus Davidson, the lead "accused" black slayer of Channon Christian and Chris Newsome was also a BGD-- and we know what THAT means--the murder of Eve Carson could not POSSIBLY have been racially motivated--lol.

Hum, crazy world.
ReplyDeleteI apologize for offending with my comments about Alde. I did not know her and only gave reasons for a less than stellar reporting on her murder.
ReplyDeleteIn the evilbig city where I lived, no Hispanic sold drugs. It was a fatal career choice. I assumed too much.

As the poster who called you a racist, I re-iterate my stance.
ReplyDeleteYou continue to spew stereotypical commentary in your blog and take the tragedy of a good friend of mine, Eve Carson who I attended high school with, and twist it into your self-righteous idealogy.
"And middle-aged Hispanic women are not a typical drug-using demographic, unlike, say, young white blonde women like Eve Carson, who I can tell you from experience suck down cocaine and heroin by the bushel-load to "stay thin" (they even have a name for the consumptive look that comes with extensive cocaine and heroin use, it's called "heroin chic"). To include Eve Carson's name in that rant there just shows your ignorance of the whole situation and your readiness to stereotype a situation.
Eve Carson was a wonderful person who we, black, white, hispanic, and otherwise, should strive to be. She spent her high school making friends of every race, spent her summers making life better for impoverished people in ecuador, and spent her year as president of the student body trying to make UNC more diverse. Not to mention the numerous other things she did to help her world. Instead of ranting on here about racism, take 30 minutes reading about her life, and why everyone is so upset about her murder.

Shame on you for turning her senseless murder into an opportunity to rant about racism.

ReplyDeleteThis is a national news story as well. A black male with his whole life ahead of him, a possibly future scholarship football player to Stanford.
The reason stories such as this, and Eve Carson's news story, or Lauren Burk's news story receive so much attention is not because of race, it is because they are kids.
It is a shock to the safety of America when we realize that we are not safe, when even our kids can be killed in an instant.
The stories which make national news are the particularly shocking ones. Eve Carson, Lauren Burk, and Jamiel Shaw were not just kids. They were kids who were going to change the world.
It is a shame that news stories such as Aldegunda Alvarez's don't receive as much media attention. But this is not because of race. This is because unfortunately when most adults are killed the media does not see it as shocking enough or notable enough to warrant national media attention.
You should be directing your anger not through racism, but through a hate of the media to portray only the most "shocking" stories.
Uhm, this posting was about media bias in which murders they will (over) cover, not about whether Eve Carson was beloved by her friends and family. Dude, they even have a name for it Missing Young White Woman Syndrome. Do you believe that the relatives and friends of Aldegunda Alvarez mourn her any less than the relatives and friends of Eve Carson? Do you believe that Aldegunda Alvarez is not worth as much as a human being as Eve Carson? Then why the difference in the media coverage of the two cases?
ReplyDeleteNote that even when the dark-skinned person killed was every bit as accomplished as Eve Carson, it *still* does not get the media attention that a young white blond woman's murder gets. That's just the facts, as unpleasant as they be... in America all people are created equal, but some people, apparently, are more equal than others. Alrighty, then!
- Badtux the "If it smells like racism..." Penguin
Uhm... I covered why there is a media bias in the above post. And its got nothing to do with race.
ReplyDeleteAlso note, that the poster who was a friend of Alde's was as irritated with you using their friend's death for your uesless rants as I am with you using my friend's.
ReplyDeleteI just can't believe how much anger and hate exists in this world. Two beautiful women are gone from this earth and all you people can do is hate each other. It makes me sick. There is no respect for human life. Not for the living. Not for the ones who are recently gone. Pathetic. No wonder other countries don't like our country. It's filled with so much incredible ignorance. Maybe just maybe, I know it's a concept that at this stage of the game may be too late, but if we do something good for each other or "pay it forward" or do something other than hating each other maybe there would be some relief to the pain people are in. Man, what a mess.
ReplyDeletePS And because there are so many angry people on this page the next step would to attack me and this email. Don't bother. I'm gone. Go do something nice for somebody....Please!
The words that come out from a person's mouth reflects the person's thoughts.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the purpose of writing this blog entry? To solve problems? Obviously not.
It is just to give chance to people to debate about the topic, no conclusion, no winner or loser.
"Begin with an end in mind." Where are we heading by continue to argue about who gets the most attention?
Life goes on. We could complain about everything that happens in this world. But situation will not get better as long as we don't take real "Actions" which really change the world/situation to be better.
oh... I almost forgot. We don't expect personal blog to 'change the world'. Anyhow, it is just a way for a person to express his/her feelings & thoughts.
MAN SSCREW ALDEGUNDA WAS MY MOM AND I WOULD APPRECIATE IF YOU WOULD JUST BEING SO RACIST MY MOM WAS AN AMAZING AND YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED MOFO FOR BEING SUCH A DICK INSTEAD GIVING OF DUMB ASS COMMENTS YOU SHOULD BE GIVING US HELP TO FIND THE SENSELESS PERSON WHO DID THIS MY MOM
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, it will turn out to be totally true that Eve Carson's killing was a drug deal gone bad. Why was she buying drugs from these guys? Well, she certainly couldn't buy in Chapel Hill. People I know in Durham have seen her over there buyin drugs. Just bc she she did drugs doesn't lessen anything she accomplished, which was truly quite a lot. Why she had to get drugs form these guys I will never understand.
